What is M3U8? Plain and Simple

An M3U8 file stores the URLs, durations, and order of tiny video chunks (TS files). Your player reads the menu, fetches each chunk, and serves you smooth video.
It started as the M3U playlist format for Winamp MP3s, then got upgraded to UTF-8 and became .m3u8. Apple later adopted it for HLS (HTTP Live Streaming), and now it's the backbone of online video everywhere.
