M3U8プロトコル解説:基本概念と応用

M3U8はHLSプロトコルで使用されるプレイリスト形式で、セグメントのインデックスや再生時間、メタデータを含みます。

What is M3U8? Plain and Simple

M3U8 isn't some dark magic. It's just a playlist. Imagine a hotpot menu: no meat on the page, just instructions on what to cook and for how long. An M3U8 file stores the URLs, durations, and order of tiny video chunks (TS files). Your player reads the menu, fetches each chunk, and serves you smooth video.

It started as the M3U playlist format for Winamp MP3s, then got upgraded to UTF-8 and became .m3u8. Apple later adopted it for HLS (HTTP Live Streaming), and now it's the backbone of online video everywhere.

Why Do Streamers Love It?

Traditional video is one giant file. You wait, you buffer, you complain. M3U8 splits video into bite-sized chunks that the player downloads as needed. If your connection wobbles, it swaps to a lower-resolution menu on the fly. That's why it works on phones, TVs, browsers, and smart fridges alike.
